Sycamore Sunset Invitational (10/3/20)
The Lady Aves raced aggressively and capitalized on a home course and cool weather.
Finishing 3rd behind state-qualifiers Loveland Lakota East and defeating district rivals Seton and Milford, the Aves are looking competitive and confident as championship races approach.
Senior Victoria Schwegmann (2nd, 18:39) cruised to a 2nd place finish, and freshman Anna Wegener (13th, 19:51), junior Jemma Pooley (18th, 20:07), sophomore Anna Munoz (22nd, 20:28) and sophomore Maria Shomo (23rd, 20:30) ran a tight pack for runners 2 through 5, separated by only 39 seconds. Senior Marissa Thorp (31st, 21:06) and sophomore Claire Berlier (39th, 21:28) rounded out the Varsity with strong times as well. This is the first time this season that the top 5 on Varsity have run in the 20 minute range, a benchmark of high-performing teams.
In the Open race, the Lady Aves team placed 2nd for the second straight week. Senior Jozy Allen (5th, 22:02) led the Lady Aves and broke up Loveland’s bid at a perfect team score. Allen was followed closely by the pack of freshman Iris Carman (11th, 22:24), senior Elizabeth Staffiera (13th, 22:44), freshman Cami Esquivel (14th, 22:44), sophomore Madeline Ronningen (17th, 23:07), junior Chloe Gordon (18th, 23:17) and sophomore Cami Mathews (19th, 23:20). Also for the second straight week, all JV top 7 runners finished in the top 20 of their race.
Many runners ran season-best or personal-record times at Sunset. PRs:
